Good Examples

Opinion page by Duane Alan Hahn.

Below are web sites that I think are good examples. They're not perfect in every area, but they're good enough to use as models since most show a pursuit of excellence. I do not judge their code, I am only interested in what I see on the page and how easy the site is to use. One of the main problems with most web sites (including many of the ones below) is that the active page links are not deactivated. I don't know if it's ignorance or laziness, but it's hard to find sites that turn off links that point to the page you are looking at.

No Rewards or Punishments

I use rel="nofollow" so the Google PageRank of your web site will not be helped or harmed by being listed on this page. This is only a list of web sites that people might be able to learn from, so please do not hesitate to let me know about your web site or any web site that you think is a good example. Since people sometimes mess up a good thing and go for flashy and hard to use instead of sticking with a site that is user friendly, there is no guarantee that any site will stay listed on this page.

Good Examples

SmudgeGuard

Easy to navigate. Link to the active page is deactivated and is visibly different so visitors do not waste any time.

Foreign Affairs

A good quality web site that deactivates the link to the active page. Seems to be an all around good example.

S&S Heating & Air Conditioning

The link to the current page has been made unclickable, but only in the navigation at the top. The link at the bottom is still clickable. When you deactivate all links on the current page that point to itself, no customer will ever get irritated because they clicked on a link to the page they are already looking at. Happier customers might mean more sales for you.

Roger's World

It's hard to find anything to complain about with this one, except for the navigation links that . . . you should get the picture by now.

AtariAge

One of my favorite web sites. It has the usual problem where links that point to the page you're looking at have not been deactivated.

Krazy Pengwin's Atari 8-bit Home

The blue text on the blue background is a little hard for me to read, but it's still a pretty good example. Notice how the link to the active page is turned off.

Blue Nile

A pretty good example that doesn't take five years to load, even with all of the images you will see on each page.

ChrisGrabenstein.com

Nice looking web site, but the active page link is not deactivated.
