Movies & TV shows that are cool, strange, or just fun to watch

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989)

This movie has a few funny spots that are worth watching.

The New Adventures of Huckleberry Finn [Live-action/animated TV series]

I saw this when it was rerun with The Banana Splits and Friends Show in the early 1970s. I liked the live-action mixed with animation when I was a kid.

NewsRadio (TV Series 3/1995 to 5/1999)

I never knew the struggles they had to keep this show on the air until I watch the DVDs. It might be hard for some people to watch the show without constantly thinking about Phil Hartman's murder, so watch at your own risk.

Night of the Comet (1984)

I love the idea of almost no one being around, but the electricity still works. What a wonderful world it would be.

NUMB3RS (TV Series)

The first episode of the second season was pure crap, but they got back on track.

CBS - TV.com - EpGuides

The Office (USA TV Series)

I didn't like the first season that much, but I did think the Jim, Pam, and Dwight characters were good. The show had that "OK, this is supposed to be funny and this is where you should laugh, so laugh damn you laugh or everyone will think you're not cool" kind of humor. Steve Carell seemed to think that everything he did was funny for a while, but he appears to be outgrowing that now. He is slowly starting to be truly funny instead of that forced "this is your assigned time to laugh because everyone in the know agrees that Steve Carell is hilarious" kind of funny.

Otherworld (TV Series 1/26/85 to 3/16/85)

Another instance where I loved the idea more than the actual show.

Parker Lewis Can't Lose (TV Series)

Although the third season sucked, you have to love this show.

Pay It Forward (2000)

I hate the stupid ending which didn't seem necessary. It seemed like it was forced, like it was cheap, emotional manipulation which only seems to work on people who watch the Lifetime cable channel. The rest of the movie was pretty good and I like the positive message, but why ruin it with such a cheesy ending? Even with the same ending, it could have been done better by a different director.

Pee-wee's Playhouse (TV Series 1/1986 to 4/1991)

I hated parts of the show depending on the episode, but I liked enough to recommend it. It was strange and cool and I liked most of the music.

Planet of the Apes (1968)

The original movie is the best of the bunch and the TV series wasn't too bad either.

An alien killing humans for the fun of it. What could be better?

Almost as good as 24. I liked the first season better than the second.

Real Genius (1985)

I don't like the party stuff and the silly ending, but the rest is good.

Red Dawn (1984)

When I was 10 or 11, I wanted to do what they did in this movie (years before the movie ever came out). Hide and kill the bad guys during the end of the world. Seems like it might have been a little fun.

Scrubs (TV Series)

One of my favorite shows starting from the first episode. Many of the episodes from the second season had too much sex junk in them. They also tried to change the theme song, but they changed it back to the original version which was great. I kind of lost interest in the show over the years after they decided they could tone down the wackiness.

Shallow Hal (2001)

This movie isn't perfect, and I thought I would hate it, but it's not that bad. There are a few good scenes and the scene when Hal sees the little girl at the Hospital the second time is surprisingly good. It didn't seem forced or melodramatic.

Shazam! (TV Series - 9/7/1974 to 9/3/1977)

The part where Billy Batson talked to the gods always seemed to faintly reflect the way things really are, as if there was a hint of truth to it.

The Showbiz Show (TV Series)

This David Spade show was pretty funny, but it got better with the second season. He dropped the lame stuff and now it's mostly all about making fun of the rich and famous.

Speed (1994)

One scene ruined what could have been a great movie and all they had to do was make the other part of the bridge a little lower and we could have believed it with very little grumbling.

Stargate SG-1 (TV Series)

Although I didn't like the first season that much and there have been some really terrible episodes, this series is pretty darn good. I also like it more than the original movie.

Star Wars [Episode IV] (1977)

Except for some of the really stupid looking aliens in the cantina, the first movie (IV) seemed believable. The characters and sets all seemed like they could possibly exist somewhere. CGI was not good enough in the 1990s, so a lot of the new stuff they added to the movie just made it look less believable. This original movie was the best. No stupid puppets (except in the Cantina), no walking teddy bears, no shades of incest, and no silly looking CGI characters.

IMDb - StarWars.com - Search for the DVD at Amazon.com

Starship Troopers (1997)

An anti-war movie that warmongers can enjoy too because Paul Verhoeven's idea that war tends to create fascists out of everyone is missed by most people. Seems like at least 80% of the special effects look flawless. The larger creatures aren't that great looking, but the smaller ones you see the most are better than anything you will see in most other movies, especially those by the clueless George Lucas. They look like they are really there touching the ground and have weight to them.

24 (TV Series 11/06/2001 To ?)

I've watched this show since the first episode and I think it's pretty good, but the only thing I don't like about it is that they jerk the camera around too much. Jerking the camera around doesn't make me think it's real and it doesn't simulate how I see. I and most people I know see things like we have a built in Steadicam in our heads. Our view is not all bouncy and jerky and any director who sees that way himself should have his vision or his brain checked. The hand-held 'shaken baby' look does not pull you into the story, it pulls you out of it.

I liked every season of 24 (except for the shaky camera) until Season 6. That season was surprisingly slow and uninteresting. It seems the show Prison Break has become the new 24 for FOX. It's much better than 24 now.

There's Something About Mary (1998)

It's not the greatest movie in the world, but there are a few really funny scenes.

Threshold

Threshold (TV Series)

This show was cancelled before it had a chance to become popular. The acting was a little weak at times (usually on the part of Charles S. Dutton which is strange since he is usually so good), but it had a good cast and it's the best of the sci-fi shows that came out in 2005.

Timecop (1994)

I would like it better without the sex scenes. That time travel machine also bugs me. You need a Buckaroo Banzai type of machine to go back in time, but not to get back to your own time? Back to the Future made more sense. Although most of this movie sucks, it's still worth watching since Ron Silver was is in it.

This movie isn't very good, but I like parts of it.

Titus (TV Series 3/27/2000 to 8/2002)

I thought the first season was good, but Cynthia Watros made it great. I didn't like the direction the show was going around the last half of the last season and I hated "Erin's" shorter hair. I kept watching in case the show got better, but it started to get too serious and preachy at times and when they said that disliking gay people was racism instead of some other kind of 'ism', I knew they lost it.

Tough Crowd

(TV Series 12/2002 to 11/2004)

I liked this funnier rip-off of Politically Incorrect, but Colin Quinn always sounded like a caveman that scientists unfroze, taught a few words, then stuck in front of a camera. As on SNL, he couldn't read his lines without tripping over his tongue about 90% of the time and he laughed at his own stuff more than the audience did. He should stick to fumbling his way through comedy clubs and leave TV to people who can communicate clearly. He wouldn't be that bad as a guest, but as a host, he sucks. I also wished they would have dropped the little unfunny skits they threw in towards the end of the show. They should have just stuck with the guests and talked about more subjects. We all knew it was a rip-off of Politically Incorrect and throwing in some extra bit of crap wasn't fooling anyone. I hope Colin Quinn never gets the chance to host another show.

Movies and TV shows that make me want to vomit and poke my own eyes out.

The North Avenue Irregulars (1979)

New Zoo Revue (1972 TV Series)

I hated this show when I was a kid. I might buy it on DVD just so I can hate it all over again and show others just how bad it was.

Nothing But Trouble (1991)

Perfect Strangers (TV Series)

Planet of the Apes (2001)

Primetime Glick (TV Series)

Unfunny garbage. I didn't like the Glick character on Martin Short's failed talk show and it's even worse here. Some people call Martin Short a comic genius, but he is capable of producing pure crap and this is one of those times.

Punk'd (TV Series)

Just like Dick Clark's relationship ruiner called TV's Bloopers & Practical Jokes from the 1980s where celebrities learned to lose trust in family, friends, lovers, and spouses, this show does the same thing in an even unfunnier way.

Real Time with Bill Maher (TV Series)

The first season was pretty good, but the show got less funny and less edgy each year and the older Bill Maher gets, the more he looks like Lady Elaine Fairchild from Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. Maybe it's from smoking too much pot.

Roseanne (TV Series)

Sanford and Son (TV Series)

Scare Tactics (TV Series)

One more crappy prank show, except this one will probably get sued by more people. Shows like these are dangerous because they can cause people to react differently to strange or dangerous situations. Many people will first wonder if they're on a prank show before they react and that hesitation could cause the loss of many lives over time.

The Sound of Music (1965)

Demons and witches and gold colored switches…come on…sing along. The tune of that My Favorite Things song just sounds evil to me, but that's not the only reason why I hate this movie.

Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

This whole movie was a disappointment and it got even worse with the introduction of that stupid green puppet. Good character, bad execution. I'm surprised they didn't throw in Grover, Cookie Monster, or Miss Piggy while they were at it. Frank Oz should have gone beyond his Muppet Show techniques for that movie. Yoda almost always looked like he had a hand up his butt, especially when "walking" (bad cane action). Frank Oz should have studied real old men walking with canes (and more) to get a more realistic feel, instead of that same old Sesame Street crap we've seen since we were little kids. I was a teen when I saw that movie and I thought, "Come on man! This isn't small time TV anymore! This is a movie, so show some extra effort instead of relying on your tired old techniques!"

Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983)

Yaaaaaay, more puppets! We even get a crappy puppet band. Big puppets such as Jabba are OK because they don't look so bad, but when it looks like a hand in a glorified sock, it's time to puke. The CGI characters they used to replace some of the puppets with (when the movie was recycled in the 1990s) didn't look that great either.

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)

We went from unrealistic looking puppets to unrealistic looking CGI characters. George Lucas was much better at disguising things when he created the first three movies. It's glaringly obvious which earth cultures he 'stole' from this time.

Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)

These movie makers have all of this technology, but they still can't seem to capture the 'realism' of the first movie from 1977. I love the idea that many movies will be created entirely by computers in the future, but that time hasn't come yet. Right now, the movements of CGI characters usually look too stiff or too smooth and bouncy. Even if you ignore that stuff, the story is uninteresting and the live-action characters are just as uninteresting.

Stuck On You (2003)

Have the Farrelly brothers given up? I don't like anything about this movie except that Eva Mendes is showing off her hot body in it. I basically agree with everything in this IMDb user comment.

The Time Machine (2002)

Poor plot point poisons picture. A bit of a spoiler here. The main character's girlfriend is killed, but he cannot accept this, so he does what most people think is impossible and invents a time machine. He goes back in time to save her and then he stupidly has her stand in a clearly dangerous spot and she is killed again. After that, he is convinced that he could come back a thousand times and she would always die. That's not very 'scientific.' Only a total idiot would make that assumption.

He was so upset by his girlfriend's death that he bent the forces of time and space to his will, but quit trying to save her life after only one try? That's totally unbelievable. The filmmakers could have made a short montage of him going back and having her die in varous ways so that we could believe he would finally quit and look to the future for an answer. If they didn't want to waste money doing that, they could have had him say that he did try a thousand times to save her, but as it is, the movie is ruined because of that one simple mistake.

Trigger Happy TV (TV Series)

Another lame prank show. A guy screaming into a giant cell phone is not funny.

The Waltons (TV Series)

The Wedding Date (2005)

A paint-by-numbers movie starring Debra Messing from the TV show Will & Grace. I dislike all movies like this where you can predict what is going to happen within the first 10 minutes. I understand that it's a silly 'chick flick,' but we are all told almost daily that women are smarter than men. I don't see how that can be true when so many women eat this crap up with a spoon. Predictable, uninspired movies like this should be insulting to women.

Whoopi (TV Series)

Not only does this show suck, but it's a pro-smoking show. They actually had the nerve to compare smoking cigarretes in public with picking your nose or scratching your butt. Either Whoopi is an idiot or her writers are. One more example of how smoking must cause some kind of psychological disorder.

Wings (TV Series)

The Witches (1990)

Pesky People

They might be the nicest people in the world, but something about their public personas make me cringe and change the channel.

Kaye Stevens

I've only seen her on Match Game and each time she was irritating and seemed starved for attention.

Fred Travalena

This Robin Williams 'wanna be' always bothered me. His voice was irritating and he never made me laugh. I was more likely to feel embarrassed for him than laugh at anything he said or did.
