Best Upset Stomach Relief

Chlorella, Enzymes, and Apple Cider Vinegar

I used to rely on original flavor Pepto-Bismol Chewables almost every day, but now I don't need them. I still keep a pack with me in case diarrhea strikes, but that rarely happens.

Before I started taking Chlorella, it seemed like I always had heartburn or the general upset stomach you often hear people complain about in TV commercials. There are better reasons to take Chlorella, such as how it helps many people to feel better, think clearer, and feel calmer, but the upset stomach relief is just as important to me. Since it contains a lot of chlorophyll, it also helps get rid of bad breath.

Chlorella works great, but after I started taking enzymes, my stomach felt even better. I take a mega-enzyme when I eat a major meal and that helps to digest just about everything.

Chlorella and mega-enzymes are usually enough to tame my stomach, but sometimes holiday foods and a tendency to overeat can me feel like vomit is going to shoot out of every available exit and that's when it's nice to have Bragg Organic Raw Apple Cider Vinegar in my refrigerator. I have tried various over-the-counter and prescription acid reducing heartburn control products and none of them come close to the almost instant relief I get from apple cider vinegar. As various people have recommended, including Sylvester Stallone in his book Sly Moves, I take a couple of teaspoons of apple cider vinegar diluted in a few ounces of liquid, such as water or apple juice. It's nice knowing that I'll never have to use anything like Alka-Seltzer, Maalox, Mylanta, Prilosec, Rolaids, Tagamet, TUMS, Zantac and so on ever again.

I got an unexpected side effect when I tried apple cider vinegar. My joints rarely hurt, but sometimes the weather seems to bring on a pain or two, so whenever that happens, I take two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar in some water or apple juice and it makes the joint pain disappear like magic. It may not do the same for you, but I read after my personal discovery that some people have had the same results, so you never know.

Best Deodorant

Kiss My Face Fragrance Free Liquid Rock Roll-on Deodorant

I've been looking off and on for many years and I think I've finally found a deodorant from a health food store that really works. I have tried various 'natural' deodorants since the 1980s and they were terrible: smelly stuff that didn't work and hard, clear 'rocks' that felt like you were rubbing your armpits with a quartz crystal. This fragrance free liquid rock roll-on by Kiss My Face is easy to use and it works like any other roll-on. It doesn't hurt, and it seems to last all day (at least around the house and doing light yard work). When I need to go out in public or do heavy yard work and would like a little extra certainty, I use the liquid rock roll-on and then apply their fragrance free active enzyme natural stick deodorant. Their active enzyme stick deodorant does not work for me on its own, but it seems to give the liquid rock roll-on a boost when I mix them.

Best Cleaning Products

Greening the Cleaning Non-Toxic Cleaning Products

Greening the Cleaning

I finally got a chance to go to Linens 'n Things in July of 2006 to buy the Imus Greening the Cleaning Citrus Sage Non-Toxic Glass & Window Cleaner and Non-Toxic All Purpose Cleaner. As far as I know, Linens 'n Things was first nation-wide store to carry these Greening the Cleaning products. My local Linens 'n Things had a huge display right inside the door, so it was impossible to miss them.

The all purpose non-toxic cleaner seems to be just as good as the famous toxic brands, but I'm most impressed with the non-toxic window cleaner. The window cleaner works better than anything I have ever used and that includes toxic name brands and homemade household cleaning products. My family has a mirror that we could never get completely clean no matter what we tried, but the Greening the Cleaning glass cleaner cleaned it right up. Our microwave had a strange mark on it that wouldn't come off, but now that's gone too and the front of the microwave never looked better. This stuff works great on glass, plastic, windows, and mirrors.

The all purpose cleaner seems to cut grease OK in the kitchen and it almost melts away soap scum in the shower as long as you scrub it soon after you spray instead of letting it soak. Soaking doesn't seem to help much. You just have to spray some more on anyway.

The Citrus Sage scent isn't very strong compared to other toxic and non-toxic cleaning products, but I wouldn't sit around sniffing it all day. If you tend to be allergic to things, you could end up sneezing if you go overboard with the stuff. Many people would classify the smell as light and tolerable, but after using it for months, I can barely take the smell. If you find out that you hate the scent too, at least you know it's non-toxic. It's better than the toxic cleaners out there that smell even worse which will also damage your health and the health of your family and friends.

I recommend both Greening the Cleaning products since they are non-toxic, but if you only had enough money for one, I'd chose the glass & window cleaner. It really is as good as they say.

Best Onion Replacement

Shallots

I get a rash when I eat onions and I also have some other allergic reactions depending on the amount of onions in the food. The good news is that I don't have to go without the onion flavor. Shallots taste very much like onions and I don't seem to have any negative reactions to them. They also taste a little better than onions to me. Shallots cost a little bit more than most onions, but it's worth it to be free of the negative effects of onions.

If you are allergic to onions, there's no guarantee that shallots will be a good alternative for you. You could also be allergic to shallots depending on how severe your allergies are. Check with your doctor. If you have no allergies and haven't tried shallots yet, you might like them better than onions, so what are you waiting for?

Best Food Storage Bags

Hefty OneZip

These bags are easy to use and they don't have that strong plastic outgassing smell that most other bags do. I can't even be in the same room with another famous brand of zip bags.

Best Paper Towels

Harris Teeter Big Roll Ultra Strong Choose-A-Size

I haven't tried every kind of paper towel out there, but of the ones I have tried over the years, the Harris Teeter Choose-A-Size paper towels are the best. They are pretty strong, you can use a smaller size so you don't waste as much, and they don't stink like so many other paper towels. There are a lot of paper towels out there that smell like raw eggs. How can you trust a paper towel that smells nasty? If you live near a Harris Teeter grocery store, try these paper towels and see if you agree.

Best Pizza

The Pizza Oven

First, the main pizza place my family cannot stand is Papa John's. They can claim to have better ingredients and better pizza, but it has always tasted like garbage to us. It tastes nothing like how a good pizza has always tasted since I started eating pizza back in the late 1960s or early 1970s. To us, Papa John's is about as tasty as licking the bottom of an old shoe.

Now to the good stuff. The best pizza that we've tried so far was from a smaller chain in the Canton area of Ohio called The Pizza Oven (Papa Bear's). The crust had a faint 'donutty' type of flavor which is hard to describe, but tasted great. Every time we visit Canton, we order some pizza and chicken from The Pizza Oven (some of the best we've tried anywhere). A trip to Canton wouldn't be the same without having some of their pizza and chicken delivered to our hotel room. If you ever visit Canton, order some of their pizza and chicken and see if you agree.

Pizza Hut used to be my second favorite pizza over the years, but the quality varies so much between restaurants that it's hard to count on them anymore. I'd still rather have a bad Pizza Hut pizza than the best one from Domino's or Papa John's.

Best Insect Control Product

Ortho Home Defense Perimeter & Indoor Insect Killer Pull 'N Spray

Ortho Home Defense Max

We've tried many different products to combat the ants that attack our house every summer, but none of them ever worked until someone recommended Ortho Home Defense. This is the greatest product I have ever used to protect our home. Ortho says it quickly kills roaches, ants, carpet beetles, crickets, spiders, centipedes, grasshoppers, mosquitoes, fleas, brown dog ticks, scorpions, sowbugs and other pests, but we only needed it for ants and it worked great to keep them away from our house.

I sprayed it in and around our house and we didn't see one ant after that. You may think that's wonderful all by itself, but there's more. I am allergic to almost everything you can think of and I react badly to smells that most "normal" people aren't even aware of, but when Ortho says this stuff is odor free, they mean it. I could only detect a very faint, pleasant, sweet smell, but I only noticed it while I was spraying and it quickly went away. Don't worry, most people wouldn't smell anything. I have a "super nose," "super ears," and so on. If I can use a product, almost anyone can.

The latest Pull 'N Spray version of the product is now called Home Defense MAX® (in a white bottle). It seems to smell and work the same as the old green Pull 'N Spray bottle.

Best No-Mess Haircut Kit

Wahl Clipper Kit with Vacuum Accessory

This complete 19 piece clipper kit with a vacuum attachment kit for "no-mess" haircuts is great. I cut my own hair with it and I like it much better than those other "as seen on TV" vacuum attached hair cutting products.

Best Mouthwash

Cinnamon Listerine PocketPaks®

I use these when I'm out and at home. I like them much better than regular mouthwash. It's about as painful as liquid mouthwash, but at least Cinnamon Listerine PocketPaks® have a better flavor and aftertaste. I love how they fit it your pocket without taking up much room. Although they say you can swallow this stuff after it dissolves, I always put it on my tongue, let it dissolve, swish it around for a while, then spit it out. I just treat it like regular mouthwash.

Best Gum

Dentyne Fire® Spicy Cinnamon

This gum is kind of hot, but Dentyne Fire® tastes great once you get over the 'burn.' It doesn't give you horse crap breath like some other gums that are big and red, it lasts a long time, and the best part is that Dentyne Fire® is sugarless! If you like cinnamon gum, try a pack if you haven't already. If you find out that you like it, the 3 pack is cheaper.

Best Pencil

Paper Mate Sharpwriter Non-refillable Mechanical Pencil

This is my favorite pencil. It's affordable and easy to use. Here's the description on my box of 12:

"Unique twist mechanism pencil that uses #2, 0.7 mm lead and a cushion point to reduce breakage."

I like twisting the 'lead' out instead of clicking the eraser like other mechanical pencils make you do.
