I'll never have any of those distracting, irritating animated ads around these games like you see at other web sites. You can just focus on the game and relax.

Introduction

Tail Gunner is one of my favorite online space shooters. It's not too hard, but it isn't so easy that it's boring. You can just take a quick break from your work and mindlessly shoot at the ships and let your brain finish solving a problem during those times when you know the answer is bubbling just below the surface. I also like Tail Gunner because it kind of reminds me of the movie The Last Starfighter. The only thing I didn't like about the game was that you had to keep clicking the mouse button to fire. I didn't feel like getting a repetitive stress injury, so a member of the AtariAge forums was nice enough to edit the program for me and now we have a rapid fire version of the game. No more clicking, just hold down the mouse button and fire away with less wear and tear on your hand. If you like to constantly click the mouse button, you can still do that if you want.

How to Play

It may take a few minutes for the game to load depending on your Internet connection. After the game is ready, click in the game area with your mouse to start the game. Move the cross-hairs with your mouse to zero in on an approaching ship. A target box will light up when an enemy ship is in your sights, giving the enemy craft's closing speed and range. Click the mouse button to fire or hold down the mouse button for rapid fire.

Whenever an enemy fighter gets past you, it will fire on your ship. You will see the screen flash and shake if they score a hit. Watch your shields — when they go, so do you. You can pause the game at any time by hitting the P key. Hit it again to resume. Use the M key to toggle sound on and off.
