Bed From Heaven

You've probably heard of Tempur-Pedic® by now. If not, Tempur-Pedic® products are a reinvention of the original viscoelastic, temperature sensitive material developed by NASA which conformed to astronauts' bodies and relieved the pressure of the tremendous forces of gravity they experienced.

I got a chance to try the Tempur-Pedic® Mattress at a Brookstone store at the mall. Brookstone had many hands-on displays and this bed was one of them. I did the 'elbow test' on the bed since every bed I have ever tried hurt my elbow if I rested my weight on it, but there was no pain at all with the Tempur-Pedic® bed.

The problem with Tempur-Pedic® products is that they are for the rich and upper-middle class. If you don't have a ton of discretionary disposable income, you're out of luck. The good thing is that other companies are making their own visco-elastic memory foam beds that conform to your body by sensing weight and temperature. They're supposed to minimize pressure points and reduce heat build-up so you don't toss and turn as much.

If you want the best quality, make sure that the Tempur-Pedic® memory foam knock-off has a density of at least 5 pounds. Some people can go as low as 3 pounds and not tell any difference, so you'll have to figure out which density might be best for you. Another thing to check for is the odor. Some products by these alternative companies smell like toxic chemicals. If you've had a chance to check out Tempur-Pedic® products at a store such as Brookstone, you know that they do not have a nasty smell. Tempur-Pedic® products have a barely noticeable pleasant scent. If the Tempur-Pedic® rip-off you plan to buy smells so bad that it almost induces vomiting, it's not going to smell much better after you get it home. A salesman will probably try to convince you that the smell will dissipate over time, but how much time? Most people don't want to wait 20 years before their bed or pillow is ready to sleep on. So look for the most stench-free product you can find with at least a 5 lb density and you should have near-Tempur-Pedic® comfort for at least half the price.

I got an e-mail in May of 2007 from a person who said that he found the smell of his Tempur-Pedic® bed to be almost unbearable. Either he is even more sensitive to smells than I am or Tempur-Pedic® beds have changed. Be sure to sniff a sample for yourself before buying a Tempur-Pedic® bed.
