Theater Popcorn at Home
The WhirleyPop Stovetop Popcorn Popper isn't some futuristic automatic gadget, but it is affordable, useful, and easier to clean than big popcorn machines. My family has owned a WhirleyPop for over a year and it works great for making popcorn that tastes like the kind you used to get at the movies.
Most of the reviews at Amazon.com seem to be positive, but a couple reviews complain about the gears breaking or not working and the thing catching on fire. I can imagine that there might be a product defect once in a while, but if your WhirleyPop catches on fire, it's probably your own fault for not following the directions, such as cooking on high or using motor oil instead of cooking oil. Maybe some people shouldn't be allowed to go near a stove.
If you want to make popcorn with your WhirleyPop that tastes like the good kind we used to get at the movies and some department stores many years ago, you'll probably want to buy a case of POP-PAKS. Of the things that I have tried, Ellis' Famous Blue Ribbon Theatre Quality Popcorn is the best. Their 4 ounce POP-PAK is designed to work in stove top popcorn poppers like the WhirleyPop. Each POP-PAK comes with everything you need including the popcorn salt.
If you run out of Ellis' POP-PAKS, or you want to try other things that do not come with popcorn salt, it's nice to have FLAVACOL Popcorn Salt in your cupboard. FLAVACOL will not magically make crappy tasting popcorn taste like Ellis' Famous Blue Ribbon Popcorn, but it will make it taste a little better.
